GUIDE TO THE YORKSHIRE RIVER ESK (Houlsyke to Egton Bridge) NAME OF RIVER: Esk. WHERE IS IT?: North York Moors west of Whitby. PUT INS/ TAKE OUTS: A mile or two above Lealholm, under a railway bridge and across a field... APPROX LENGTH: Not too long. TIME NEEDED: A good couple of hours with inspections. ACCESS SITUATION: Rumoured to be closed to recreational craft... WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: Needs to have been raining hard for a couple of days. GRADING: Grade 3/ 4+ (5+). MAJOR HAZARDS: Absolutely. Spectrum of grade 3/ 4/ 5 drops and a not-very-nice farmer with an angry looking double-barrel!!! GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a good river, but it has to be raining pretty hard to make the trip worthwhile. The river isn't particularly long, it takes about an hour and a half. Also, there's not a lot else to paddle in the area as far as I know (though there a few interesting looking becks on the O.S. map). The river consists of several reasonably long boulder gardens at grade 3 and 4. There are some serious drops running at 5 and above which will need inspection and (usually) portage! OTHER NOTES: Sections above and below have not been done to my knowledge, although there are some good falls as you aproach Briggswath on the A169... I always look but have never done! CONTRIBUTED BY: Selected members (with selective memory) of YUCC, also David Adamson. |
